SONNYWEEMS Montgomery: Knicks Interested in Sonny Weems, Maurice Evans
According to agent Roger Montgomery, the Knicks have ‘shown some interest’ in both Sonny Weems and Maurice Evans, both of whom he represents. The Knicks, who are desperate for depth at shooting guard, would benefit from either pickup.

The Raptors recently withdrew their qualifying offer to Sonny Weems, and the 3-year veteran is now up for grabs. The athletic shooting guard played for the Zalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania last year where he averaged 15.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Weems could also serve as a fill defensively for the injured Iman Shumpert. Though Montgomery noted that Weems isn’t ‘jumping on a veteran’s minimum deal‘, he may take less to join a team that’s desirable to him- which Montgomery even pointed out, “In a perfect world, if you play for a team like the Knicks or Boston, you might very well consider looking at a minimum situation because you know you’re going to get a chance to contribute to a winning franchise. So those are things that you have to look at. I’m not saying we’ll take a minimum deal just yet, because there’s still a little bit of money left in the market. But we’ll see what happens.”

With just veteran’s minimum contracts remaining, Maurice Evans is more in the Knicks price range considering he made just $1.2 million last season with Washington. The 9-year veteran averaged 4.9 points and 1.0 rebound in 14 minutes per game last season, but would bring veteran leadership to the team. Evans, who played under Mike Woodson with the Hawks in ’08-’10, can guard several positions, and would be a perfect fit for the veteran heavy Knicks squad.

“Mo would fit for a number of reasons because what he does as a veteran, and he’s played for Woody. And I think Sonny would be an absolute steal if he was able to go play with them, just because of how athletic he is. I think that he could be a starter and he could be a rotation guy. I think he would be ideal,” Montgomery told ESPN NY.
