Jeremy Lin’s unexpected rise to stardom made for one of the most compelling underdog stories in sports history. However, along with Linsanity came thousands of unlicensed vendors selling tons of merchandise- anything and everything from t-shirts to marijuana to beverages. Up until this point, Jeremy Lin was making absolutely no revenue off of Linsanity merchandise as he did not own the trademark.

Lin now has ownership of the Linsanity trademark after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected the remaining applicants, leaving Jeremy as the sole candidate. ”We’re delighted. This is the right result,” said Lin’s lawyer, Pamela Deese. He hasn’t officially been granted the trademark, but since there is no one left to oppose the phenomenon, he is essentially in control. From this point on, anyone that uses Linsanity without his permission will be violating trademark law and forced to owe the NBA star a cut of the revenue.
